Offshore Wind Development Draws Funding, Agency Initiatives Backed by White House

The White House is providing funding and promoting interagency collaboration with the goal of spurring the development of offshore wind facilities. By 2030, offshore wind will provide 22 gigawatts of clean energy, enough to power 4.5 million homes, the White House said during a Summit on Offshore Wind it hosted Sept. 28 with federal, state and industry group representatives. The Energy Department will fund a $593,000 multi-state project with New York, Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island to develop a regional strategy to develop offshore wind projects. The White House Council on Environmental Quality and the Domestic Policy Council will lead an interagency working group to ensure coordination among federal agencies working on offshore wind. Other agencies in the working group are the departments of Interior, Energy, Defense, Transportation, Commerce and Homeland Security as well as the Environmental Protection Agency, Army Corps of Engineers and Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, according to a Sept. 28 fact sheet.
