DOE Adopts Industry Conservation Standards For Packaged Terminal AC Units, Heat Pumps

The Energy Department adopted existing industry standards for packaged terminal air conditioners (PTACs) and packaged terminal heat pumps (PTHPs), typically used in large commercial facilities such as hotels, hospitals and apartment buildings, in a June 30 final rule. In the rule, the department is adopting the amended energy conservation standards for PTACs based on the existing PTAC standards in the American National Standards Institute/American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers/ Illuminating Engineering Society Standard 90.1-2013. By adopting the 2013 version of the ANSI/ASHRAE/ IES standard, the minimum efficiency of PTACs is expected to increase by about 2 percent.
