Illinois Democrat Tammy Duckworth, who is running to unseat Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ⅲ.) in 2016, said June 12 that she will resist congressional efforts to weaken federal renewable fuel mandates and said the Environmental Protection Agency needs to raise the minimums to "the levels Congress intended" eight years ago. Duckworth, who serves in the House and served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot in the Iraq war, acknowledged that "there's a hot debate in Congress" over whether to end the mandate. Speaking at a forum on biofuels research held by the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, she said increasing domestic ethanol and other renewable fuel production is a valuable tool to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
