Carbon Allowance Price Averages $5.22 In RGGI Secondary Market for Fourth Quarter

The average price in the secondary market for Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative carbon allowances was $5.22 in the fourth quarter of 2014, continuing the recent upward trend in RGGI allowance prices, according to a report released Feb. 24. The carbon dioxide allowance price was 7 percent higher than in the third quarter and 69 percent higher than in the fourth quarter of 2013, the report by RGGI said. Trading volume in the secondary market for RGGI allowances also increased significantly in the fourth quarter, as electric power generators prepared to meet a deadline for compliance with the RGGI program, the report said. Generators will have to hold allowances equal to at least 50 percent of their expected emissions for 2015 by March 2.
