摘要

Certain last-ditch efforts to intervene in climate change, such as removing carbon from the air and storing it underground, could work, but they need to be studied and tested more before they are widely deployed, a pair of federally funded scientific reports said Feb. 10. The reports marked the first time the U.S. government has taken a serious look at efforts to intervene in climate change, sometimes referred to as "climate geo-engineering," which were previously considered a taboo subject. Of the two strategies the National Research Council considered, carbon removal and sequestration emerged as a more promising option for getting at the root cause of climate change. Researchers also looked at another option, called albedo modification or solar radiation management, that seeks to offset some of the world's greenhouse gas ef- fect but doesn't address the greenhouse gas concentrations themselves. Still, the researchers emphasized that climate intervention is "no silver bullet."
