EPA Vows to Decrease Duplication In Grantee Data Requests After Audit

The Environment Protection Agency should reduce administrative costs by eliminating grant reporting duplication, the Government Accountability Office said in report released Aug. 15. EPA officials collect certain information from grantees twice to prepare a performance report and incorporate the data into a repository, the GAO said. The agency agreed with the series of GAO recommendations, vowing to take action toward reform in fiscal year 2017. EPA officials doled out nearly $4 billion in fiscal year 2015 grants, roughly half the EPA budget. Water-related state revolving funds accounted for roughly 60 percent of those grants, the GAO said.
