Senate Measure Pushes Full Reimbursement For Requests Linked to Gold King Mine Spill

Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) introduced legislation May 18 to force the Environmental Protection Agency to fully reimburse all appropriate tort and emergency response compensation requests linked to the August 2015 Gold King Mine spill, caused by agency contractors. The legislation would force the EPA to pony up compensation for the more than 60 federal tort claims related to the spill, the lawmakers said in a press release, adding that the payouts should be drawn from the EPA's "own budget." The bill also would force the EPA to process claims made after Oct. 31, 2015, the lawmakers said, and require agency coordination with states and local tribes to monitor Animas River water quality.
