NRC Seeks Comments on Design Criteria For Non-Light Water Nuclear Reactors

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking public feedback on draft guidance detailing design criteria for advanced non-light water nuclear reactors. The NRC, which has said it expects to receive the first advanced non-light water reactor application within the next five years, has been working with the Energy Department to prepare a regulatory framework to apply to these reactors. These reactors don't rely on water as coolants but rather on other materials, such as molten salt mixtures, to carry heat away. Currently, all 100 of the licensed nuclear reactors in the U.S. are light-water reactors cooled by water.
