Republican presidential hopeful Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) would work to end all energy mandates and subsidies if he held the nation's highest office, not just the renewable fuel standard, Cruz said at the most recent Republican debate. Candidate John Kasich, the Republican governor of Ohio, sidestepped making a judgment about how Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) has handled a drinking water crisis, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said he hadn't flip-flopped on climate issues. Separately, President Barack Obama said a Democrat will succeed him in office, maintaining climate progress. "[W]e can't let Republicans roll this progress back by giving fossil fuel companies the ability to run roughshod and destroy our environment for future generations," Obama told House Democrats at a conference they held in Baltimore on Jan. 28. "And rather than subsidize the past, we should be investing in the future, and the incredible opportunities that come with it. That's what we're focused on. That's what all Democrats believe in," Obama said.
