Amendment to Senate Energy Bill to Provide $400 Million for Flint, Mich., Infrastructure

Legislation that would provide $400 million in federal emergency funding to help Flint, Mich., respond to its drinking water crisis was announced Jan. 28 by three Democratic members of the Michigan congressional delegation. In addition to the funding to help the city replace or repair its water infrastructure, the bill would establish and fund a $200 million Center of Excellence on Lead Exposure to focus on the immediate and long-term needs of children and adults exposed to lead. Michigan Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D) and Gary Peters (D) and House Rep. Dan Kildee (D), whose district includes Flint, introduced the legislation as an amendment to the Senate energy bill. "The water crisis in Flint is an immense failure on the part of the State of Michigan to protect the health and safety of the City's residents," Peters said in the statement. "While the State must accept full responsibility, the federal government can leverage the investments the state needs to make."
