Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Site License Bill Floated

Draft legislation in the House aims to tackle some of the legal issues holding up the licensing of Yucca Mountain as a permanent repository for the nation's nuclear waste. The House Energy and Commerce Committee's Environment Subcommittee, chaired by Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.), released on April 19 a discussion draft of legislation ahead of an April 26 hearing to receive feedback. The bill is a reflection of the renewed interest in the Republican-controlled Congress for resuming work on Yucca Mountain this year, after the Obama administration mothballed work on a license for the project at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 2010. Some Nevada politicians and environmental groups said they opposed the draft and don't think the license will get approved.
