The Energy Department will continue work to clean up a former nuclear weapons site if Rick Perry is confirmed to lead the agency, the former Texas governor told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Jan. 19. Among Perry's tasks heading the DOE are overseeing the cleanup at the Hanford Nuclear Site in Washington State, where workers manage about 53 million gallons of chemical and radioactive waste kept in 177 aging underground tanks. Under a 1989 deal known as the Tri-Party Agreement, the DOE, Environmental Protection Agency and Washington regulators agreed to clean up the site to reduce risks to workers and the environment.
