EPA Releases Federal Plan to Reduce Landfills’ Methane Emissions

States and territories that haven’t submitted methane emission reduction plans for their municipal solid waste landfills will be subject to federal requirements, the EPA announcedMonday in an unpublished final rule.The federal plan will have the same elements state plans require, including an inventory of facilities, emission limits, and compliance schedules. About 1,600 landfills are potentiallyaffected by the rule, the Environmental Protection Agency said.1. Last March, the agency found 42 states and territories failed to submit implementation plans for methane emission reduction standards updated in 2016.2. The 2016 emission guidelines require landfills that reach a gas emissions threshold of 34 metric tons of non-methane organic compounds or more annually to install a gas collectionsystem.
