Canada will have to set national greenhouse gas emission reduction targets every five years, under legislation that Parliament passed Tuesday.The bill, known as the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, passed the Senate, Canada’s upper house, without amendment after clearing the House of Commons June 22. It’sexpected shortly to receive Royal Assent, a formal procedure that makes the bill law.The legislation requires Ottawa to lay out plans for how it will meet reduction targets that begin in 2030 and end in 2050, when the goal is net-zero emissions, according to the legislation.Regulators also must issue progress reports.
