The coronavirus has exposed U.S. supply chain vulnerability. But what is driving that vulnerability, and what can be done to rebuild resiliency at a national level in the short and long term?The answers to these questions aren’t that surprising, but they may signal a renewed effort on the part of the Biden Administration to realign private sector incentives to achieve a moreresilient and coordinated supply chain strategy going forward.The administration believes that America’s supply chain problems are rooted in insufficient domestic manufacturing capacity-the product of years of decline due to a singular focus onefficiency and low cost instead of sustainability and resilience and from the impact of other nations’ industrial and strategic policies. Reversing this trend will require significant investmentand political will on the part of the administration to engage with private enterprise and the global community in an effort strengthen the resiliency of U.S. supply chains. While thegovernment must take the lead in several areas to bolster a coordinated international effort, private industry should begin to prepare to prioritize investment strategies with theinitiatives the administration will champion.
