California to Study Oil, Gas Fugitive Emissions

Two California state agencies will examine defunct oil and gas wells to measure if greenhouse gases, toxicair contaminants, volatile organic compounds, and other pollutants are escaping into the air.Under a bill signed Oct. 12 by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), the California Air Resources Board and the Divisionof Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources will examine up to 500 idle, deserted, and abandoned wells to seeif so-called fugitive emissions are getting into the air.
