EPA Says County in North Dakota Must Develop Mitigation Plan for Little Knife River

Region 8 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered Dunn County, N.D., to develop a mitigation plan for the Little Knife River after alleging the county violated the Clean Water Act by completely filling and rerouting about 1,300 feet of the river last year. The order, issued May 18, alleges that the county in west-central North Dakota violated the act by discharging material into the river without obtaining a permit when it straightened and realigned two roads. Reinhard Hauck, Dunn County auditor, told BNA that the county has agreed to put together a mitigation plan. He said it hoped to present the plan to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the next two months.
