The climate change levy

Bandvulc Tyres is a truck-tyre retreading company, producing 3,000 tyres per week. Each tyre we recycle saves 15 gallons of oil and 44kg of rubber compound over a new tyre. You can imagine the savings made to the environment's raw materials -and yet there's no corner-cutting in terms of quality. Retreads, which have to meet the same production criteria as new tyres, are used by large supermarket fleets, fuel and gas delivery vehicles and, perhaps surprisingly, aircraft. Thanks to the Government's introduction of the Climate Change Levy, Bandvulc is now saddled with what represents a 10% surcharge on gas and electricity costs - an extra £20,000 a year on production costs. Not a bad start to an agreement that was to deliver wider benefits through lower energy costs.
