CSS, the organisation representing local-council directors responsible for the environment, is defending its series of trials designed to test the benefits of switching off or dimming street lighting.rnA number of trials undertaken by local authorities came under fire in the Daily Mail, which argued it would lead to an increase in crime and road safety issues.rnBut CSS says that it is important to understand the pros and cons, and to give local communities an opportunity to comment. It also stressed that the key issues involved were light pollution and carbon reduction, rather than saving money.
