The challenge facing the UK's public and private sectors to develop a residential infrastructure to meet current and projected needs is truly daunting. Not only do we urgently need more housing stock to support social and economic growth, but we must deliver this in the light of serious long-term transport challenges.rnAnd just to make all these challenges a little bit more difficult, we must now do this within the Government's ambitious - and absolutely necessary - framework to achieve substantial carbon reduction targets in the face of climate change. It is therefore an unhappy coincidence that for the immediate future we must achieve substantially higher levels of sustained housing growth than ever before while in the grips of a severe and ongoing recession.
