EPA has dropped perchlorate from a rule listing unregulated drinking water contaminants that require additional monitoring, clearing the way for the agency to make a decision on whether to set a strict regulatory standard for the ubiquitous rocket fuel component, which contaminates drinking water in more than 20 states. The move comes at a time when key congressional Democrats are pushing EPA to take action on perchlorate and scientific studies are showing increasing harm from high levels of exposure.
