KEY LAWMAKER WILL REVIEW LEGISLATIVE GAPS IN NANOTECH OVERSIGHT

A key House lawmaker is rejecting the Bush administration's claim that existing environmental, health and safety laws are sufficient to address potential risks from the emerging field of nanotechnology and plans to hold a hearing in 2008 to explore what legislative fixes might be needed to ensure adequate regulation. Rep. Albert Wynn (D-MD), who chairs the House Environment & Hazardous Materials Subcommittee, issued a statement last month saying that he plans to hold a hearing this year "on the serious gaps in the current statutory and regulatory framework [in regard to nanotechnology] to provide appropriate oversight and protect human health and the environment."
