Advisors' Research Focus Opens Door To Stricter Epa Ozone Policies

Months after EPA finalized strict new ozone standards, agency advisors are urging the agency to focus on several new research areas that could prompt adoption of even stricter standards in a national ambient air quality standard (NAAQS) that is scheduled for fmalization in 2013. At a well-attended kickoff workshop here Oct. 29 to discuss a preliminary plan for the next ozone NAAQS review, health science advisors recommended the agency focus on several issues, including ozone's mortality impacts, whether ozone is the correct indicator for the standard, how ozone should be addressed as a contributer to climate change, and how EPA will handle issues surrounding rising global levels of the pollutant.
