CRITICS SAY NEW PUGET SOUND PROGRAM MAY LIMIT EPA ESTUARY FUNDS

Plans by Washington state lawmakers to create a new EPA office to oversee the cleanup of Puget Sound is drawing criticism from some sources who say it could undermine overall funding levels for EPA's National Estuary Program. Rep. Norm Dicks (D-WA), who chairs the appropriations panel that funds EPA, along with Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA) and several other members of the state's delegation introduced H.R. 6394 on June 25. Sens. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Patty Murray (D-WA) introduced companion legislation, S. 3196, the same day.
