EPA appears to be resisting a push from the advanced biofuels industry to win additional credits for developing fuels-including garbage converted to ethanol-that exceed the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals of the recent energy law's renewable fuel standard (RFS), sources say. The agency's apparent reluctance may spur the renewable fuels industry to ask Congress to intervene by passing legislation granting more credits to developers of very low carbon fuels, the sources add. One industry source touts the pollution reduction benefits of advanced biofuels, saying for example that ethanol created from garbage 'blows away' the RFS' requirement for GHG reductions from renewable fuels.
