ENVIRONMENTALISTS HAIL LANDMARK EPA ENFORCEMENT OF CRT EXPORT BAN

EPA is taking an enforcement action against an Oklahoma electronics recycler who exported a cache of electronic waste (e-waste) containing cathode ray tubes (CRTs), a move environmentalists are hailing as the first sign that the Obama EPA intends to enforce the long-standing ban on the export of CRTs-a marked departure from the Bush EPA's noted disregard for the ban.rnIn the June 5 order EPA says it observed EarthECycle LLC conduct a free e-waste collection drive in Pittsburgh, PA, from March 19-22. Among those components collected were computer monitors containing CRTs, which are known to contain several pounds of lead apiece. Those devices were shipped overseas to Honk Kong, where they were intercepted by the local environmental authorities, who returned the cargo to the United States and notified EPA of the infraction.
