EPA officials are defending the latest process for completing the agency's premier chemical risk assessments from continuing criticisms that the process is still open to influence by other federal agencies and the White House. A key congressional subcommittee is also seeking additional review of the process.rnEPA Administrator Lisa Jackson released May 21 a new process for performing the chemical assessments for the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database of some 540 chemicals, which are often the basis for agency cleanup standards and other chemical-specific decisions.
