EPA Grapples With Methods For Targeting Groups Of Water Contaminants

EPA is facing technical, regulatory and legal challenges as it works to develop methods that will allow the agency for the first time to select and regulate groups of contaminants for regulation under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). Speaking at the annual meeting of the Society for Risk Analysis Dec. 8, Elizabeth Doyle of EPA's Office of Water said the the new approach could present some legal issues that will require resolution by agency lawyers. "This is a new way for our attorneys to be looking at this as well as for us," she said. Doyle added the agency also plans to seek advice from its Science Advisory Board (SAB) on how to select and regulate contaminants but only after officials have already selected an initial group of contaminants and begun developing a proposed regulatory approach for it.
