Activists Win Broad Support In Bid To Tighten EPA Dioxin Cleanup Goals

Some state agencies, an association of nurses, and a Superfund cleanup consultant are backing environmentalists' calls for EPA to strengthen its proposed interim cleanup values for the ubiquitous class of contaminants known as dioxins, arguing in recent comments that the agency should choose its strict cancer protection standard rather than a weaker non-cancer standard.rnEPA's proposed interim preliminary remediation goal (PRG) for dioxin includes non-cancer and cancer values for both residential and non-residential sites, for a total of four different goals. These values vary widely, ranging from 3.7 parts per trillion (ppt) dioxin in soil to protect against cancer at residential sites up to 950 ppt for non-cancer endpoints at commercial sites.
