EPA Resists Boxer, GAO Call To Craft Criteria For New Drinking Water Rules

EPA is resisting calls by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and Senate environment committee Chairwoman Barbara Boxer (D-CA) to craft criteria for determining whether to regulate drinking water contaminants and evaluate them based on their risks, arguing that existing EPA policies are sufficient to protect the resource. GAO July 12 released a report finding a host of problems in EPA's implementation of the 1996 revisions to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and outlining 17 recommendations it made to EPA on how to improve that implementation.
