EPA is beginning to outline the conditions when screening and mitigation are needed at petroleum vapor intrusion (PVI) sites even ahead of finalizing planned guidance on the issue, suggesting in a recent paper that sites where building foundations are touching petroleum plumes or there are anaerobic soil conditions, require special attention. Petroleum hydrocarbons typically degrade more quickly than chlorinated hydrocarbons, and thus are less likely to pose a vapor intrusion risk, a point industry has made in arguing that petroleum plumes pose little threat to human health.
