Environmentalists Gear Up To Oppose EPA Plan For CCS Waste Rule Waiver

A coalition of environmental groups is opposing an EPA proposal to exempt underground injection of carbon dioxide (CO2) from regulation as a hazardous waste, and is expressing broader concerns about legislative and administrative efforts to establish liability relief for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) projects. "We stand united against efforts to relieve CCS operators from regulatory and statutory responsibilities and liabilities that other similar industrial activities routinely shoulder," a coalition of environmental groups say in the April 12 letter to numerous Obama administration officials who are considering how to address liability from CCS.
