EPA's IRIS Chief Vows To Issue Controversial Dioxin, Arsenic Reviews In 2011

The acting director of EPA's Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) risk assessment process is vowing to improve the efficiency and output of the program that forms the basis for many agency policy decisions, saying the agency can finalize and publish this year long-pending and highly contentious reviews of chemicals including arsenic and dioxin. "I hope to make sure that we get more chemicals up to date and get more chemicals in [a fewer] number [of] years added" in the IRIS process, Vincent James Cogliano, the program's acting chief, said in a March 23 interview with Inside EPA. Cogliano took the position earlier this year after returning to the agency following an extended detail working with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France.
