Reversing Bush Policy, EPA Launches Long-Sought Perchlorate Rulemaking

EPA is moving forward with a rulemaking to set enforceable drinking water cleanup standards for the rocket fuel ingredient perchlorate after the White House Office of Management & Budget (OMB) Feb. 1 approved its determination that setting a drinking water standard would provide a meaningful opportunity to reduce risks posed by the chemical. The agency's long-expected decision reverses the Bush administration's controversial decision in 2008 to refrain from regulating the ubiquitous chemical under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).
