EPA Rejects IG Call To Review 'Limited' Data Underpinning Lead Paint Rule

EPA is rejecting calls from its Inspector General (IG) to review its "limited" data underpinning a rule setting lead paint renovation requirements, with the agency arguing its analysis was "appropriate" despite the IG's recommendation for EPA to review the rule's costs and benefits to determine whether it should amend or even scrap the policy. The IG in a July 27 report however reiterates its finding that although EPA's cost-benefit analysis for the 2008 rule - and a subsequent 2010 rule scrapping an "opt-out" provision - met statutory requirements, it might be flawed due to several limitations as a result of the time pressures EPA faced conducting the study.
