摘要

Open government and environmental groups Jan. 24 sent letters to the Defense and Health & Human Services secretaries to stress concerns and question the legal justification for the Department of the Navy's (DON) recent decision to restrict the release of water contamination data from a North Carolina base where up to 1 million people may have been exposed to toxic chemicals. Earlier this month, DON pressed the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR), a federal health agency conducting studies on exposures to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in drinking water at the base, to withhold the public release of data related to active potable water wells due to concerns that the security of the supplies could be compromised.
