EPA Weighing Options For Endorsing ASTM 'Greener Cleanup' Standard

EPA is considering the extent to which it will encourage the use of an upcoming independent standard for "greener" remediation that is based on EPA cleanup principles and includes a host of best management practices (BMPs) for reducing energy use, air emissions and water impacts that occur during the cleanup of contaminated sites. EPA has been working closely with ASTM International on the development of the greener remediation standard over the past several years, EPA and state officials say, but the agency has not yet decided whether it will take any official action once the standard is finalized later this year.
