EPA Resists IG Push For Broad Effort To Boost Oil, Gas Air Data Collection

EPA is resisting some calls from its Inspector General (IG) to improve its collection of emissions data from oil and gas production processes, saying that while the agency agrees it needs a "comprehensive strategy" to improve the data, it disagrees with the IG's suggestion to ensure states submit required data on the sector's emissions. In a Feb. 20 report, "EPA Needs to Improve the Air Emissions Data for the Oil and Natural Gas Production Sector," the IG calls for the agency to develop a broad strategy across its various offices for improving emissions data from the oil and gas sector, prioritizing updated or first-time emissions factors for oil and gas production processes about which there is little data, such as hybrid wells, wastewater ponds, fracking of oil wells and liquids unloading.
