Pesticide Pact Tests New EPA Approach For Mitigating Species Risks

The recently proposed EPA settlement with environmentalists, which requires the agency to assess and mitigate any risks of five pesticides to endangered species on a nationwide scale, will provide the first test for the administration's new process for consulting with federal wildlife officials on how to address risks, though officials fear they may lack the resources to assess the five pesticides at issue. Conducting these first consultations with the wildlife agencies and mitigating the risks "will take a very substantial body of effort by EPA" and federal wildlife officials, William Jordan, deputy director of EPA's pesticides office, told a June 17 event sponsored by the American Bar Association (ABA) and the Environmental Law Institute (ELI).
