摘要

An EPA plan to pare back a mobile radiation lab program that allows for on-site radiological sample analysis during radiological incidents or at Superfund sites is drawing opposition from environmentalists and the state of California, which argue the move raises public safety concerns. At issue is a plan from EPA's Office of Radiation and Indoor Air (ORIA) to scale back from two Mobile Environmental Radiation Laboratories (MERLs) to one - moving what sources say is a state-of-the art mobile lab located at the agency's Las Vegas, NV, location to Montgomery, AL, where it will be merged with a second MERL. EPA says the decision is based on financial constraints.
