EPA is said to be considering removing some classes of buses from its increasingly controversial plan to exempt certain vocational vehicles from its upcoming phase 2 greenhouse rule for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, a step that would address concerns from California regulators who have made emissions from transit buses a priority in their broader effort to limit GHGs from vocational vehicles. At the same time, sources say the agency may be considering strengthening the emission limits for the overall vocational sector, under pressure from environmentalists who say that existing vehicles already meet the standards proposed for model year (MY) 2021, while still allowing a potential offramp for seven classes of vehicles.
