New Data Prompt Renewed EPA Review Of Stronger Lead Dust Standards

An EPA official says the agency is reviewing new data that could finally lead EPA to grant advocates' years-old push to update its regulatory standards for lead dust in residences after it acknowledged that its current levels are likely inadequate to protect human health, although budget restrictions could limit the progress that the agency can make. Tanya Mottley, director of EPA's National Program Chemicals Division in the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics, told a May 25 meeting of the agency's Children's Health Protection Advisory Committee (CHPAC) in Washington, D.C. that staff received the new data late last year and are still studying the feasibility of stronger dust levels.
