EPA Waste Office Eyeing Revisions To Superfund Lead Policies, Approach

EPA is weighing possible revisions to its policies and approaches for tackling lead at Superfund sites including improving cross-agency coordination on addressing multiple sources of lead and reviewing the existing lead level used in cleanups at such sites, says Carlton Waterhouse, the top Biden political appointee in the agency's waste office."We're looking at specifically developing two potential changes in our policies and approach to lead at Superfund sites," Waterhouse said March 30 during an EPA Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC) panel meeting.The first under consideration is adopting a greater level of cross-agency coordination to address multiple sources of lead, while also drawing in state agencies and local governments, he said, echoing remarks he made during a March 26 interview with Inside EPA."The other is to consider our lead number and just to make sure we have the best science guiding us in our approach to cleaning up these sites," he said.
