Environmentalists and the chemical sector are sparring over whether EPA should endorse interim storage for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as part of its interim guidance on PFAS disposal, with environmentalists warning of major data gaps about disposal but industry claiming that "safe and effective" disposal methods exist. EPA sought public comment until Feb. 22 on its interim guidance, which was congressionally mandated under the fiscal year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act. The agency recently posted comments it received online. The agency in December issued the guidance, outlining currently available technologies but declining to endorse or dismiss any, including incineration, while noting uncertainties and knowledge gaps that still need to be addressed. At the time, it said it would incorporate comments into a revised document.
