Work Will Beging in the next three months to enable Port Giles to be served by fully loaded Panamax class grain vessels. The proposed works include dredging to deepen the approach channel and berth pocket, disposal of dredge spoil by land reclamation, and minor building works to the existing jetty fendering system. The total cost is estimated at approximately $7 million including about $3.3 million for dredging and seawall construction. Port Giles is on the eastern side of South Australia's Yorke Peninsula, lying on Gulf St Vincent north of Edithburgh. Established in 1970 it handles approximately 500,000t/a of export grain in approximately 12 to 15 ships. As a result of the SA government's port privatisation in 2001, Elinders Ports Pty Ltd acquired a long-term lease of land and operations at Port Giles. The contract requires Flinders Ports to undertake the now-planned capital works.
