New diesel hydraulic trains for regional Victoria

Bombardier Australia has completed the first new VLocity diesel hydraulic multiple unit train for use on Victoria's four main regional lines from Melbourne to Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Traralgon. The train is now undergoing commissioning trials before entering service early next year. Construction is under way at Bombardier Australia's plant at Dandenong, of 38 of the new railcars. They are being built under a $535 million contract which includes railcar construction and-15 years maintenance. The provision of fast modern trains is a critical component of the Victorian Regional Fast Rail project which aims to significantly improve regional commuting and long distance travel from Melbourne by upgrading the track, signalling and communications infrastructure of the four main regional lines at an infrastructure cost of $610 million.
