Brisbane court building nears completion

Walter Construction Group Limited is on track to complete the $135 million Brisbane Magistrates Court project in September for the Queensland Department of Attorney General. The 16-level building consists of two basement levels, one level ground floor entry podium, 10 levels of offices and courtrooms, and three levels of steel roof and plant rooms. Engineers on the project are from Walter, Robert Bird & Partners and ABM Cox Rayner. The use of copper sheeting and Alpolic fascias on the steel roofs presented challenges for detail and construction. Due to the cantilever nature of the three main roof portions, it was considered unfeasible to scaffold the whole building height to attach the soffit lining. Consequently, the cantilever roof was broken down into three 4t components, which were assembled and sheeted on the ground, and then lifted into place by a tower crane. This involved precise detailing from ABM Cox Rayner to enable simple sealing details between the components after erection and good management to achieve tight tolerances.
