Millennium Train on Track

After several months of delays, teething problems and the resulting bad press, the latest addition to Sydney's ageing fleet of trains is now proving itself on the track. This cover story looks at how the reliability of the Millennium Train has improved, the journey it has taken to reach this point and some of its many features that make the new train one of the best in the world. Stage 1 of the Millennium Train project has been completed, with EDI Rail delivering the 20th four-car set to the NSW State Rail Authority (StateRail) last month. The completion of the stage has also marked a substantial increase in the reliability of the new trains. Stephen Gillies, managing director of Downer EDI (EDI Rail's parent company), said the Millennium Train fleet travelled approximately 117,000km for the month of November with only one incident, substantially better than the reliability target set by StateRail of one incident in 60,000km travelled for that month.
