I recently attended and delivered two papers to a symposium in Japan organised with the support of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) and other relevant organisations in the international program of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) National Assembly Congress. The Task Group on Disaster Risk Management as part of the WFEO Standing Committee on Engineering and the Environment was the secretariat of the symposium. The theme was "Disaster risk management". This was a joint JSCE activity with support of the Science Council of Japan, which is a national member of the WFEO. The symposium brought together 13 papers on seismic and water related disasters and the measures to overcome them, and more than 50 participants from 11 countries - Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
