Approximately 40 commercial-sized projects have adopted water source geothermal technology in Australia over the past 10 years. Compared with the US and Europe, the uptake has been slow. Be it high drilling costs or the perceived risk with this recent technology, several projects have only proceeded with state or federal government support. Deep well direct-exchange (DWDX) geothermal systems, however, are a relatively new technology which may encourage more to take the concept up. DWDX systems have been in use overseas for approximately seven years, but only in the past couple of years have they been offered in Australia.
